Bio
Dr Bingjie Song completed her early academic training in China at Shaanxi Normal University between 2010 and 2017. She moved to Australia to undertake a PhD in Human Geography at the University of Adelaide’s School of Social Sciences, completing her doctorate between 2019 and 2023.

Her doctoral research examined multifunctional agriculture in peri-urban regions of Australia and China, drawing on extensive mixed-methods fieldwork. Following the completion of her PhD, Dr Song joined Central Queensland University as a Senior Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (2023–2025), where she researched the social impacts of technological transition and decarbonisation on mining communities.

In 2026, Dr Song joined the University of Western Australia as a Lecturer in Human Geography. Her work at UWA focuses on regional development, labour market transitions, and the social dimensions of green and digital transitions in mining and agricultural regions. Alongside her research, she lectures in geography and supervises honours and postgraduate research students.

Dr Song’s research interests centre on rural and regional development, multifunctional agriculture, and the social dimensions of technological and economic change in rural communities. Her work spans several interconnected areas, including:

  • Examining multifunctional agriculture in peri-urban and rural regions in Australia and China, with a focus on how farmers adapt to policy shifts, market changes and socio-economic conditions

  • Analysing decision-making and risk perceptions among rural landholders, exploring how different socio-economic contexts shape farming trajectories and rural resilience

  • Engaging with regional community responses to technological transitions, including research on the social impacts of change in key industries such as mining and the broader implications for regional labour markets and development pathways

  • Investigating agricultural landscape transformation and ecosystem services, including how land-use change affects environmental outcomes and community wellbeing
