Dandjoo Darbalung: Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Excellence

Empowering futures, honouring Culture

Dandjoo Darbalung, gifted by respected Elder Dr Noel Nannup, means “mixing together”. It reflects the natural convergence of salt and fresh water in the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), a powerful symbol of unity, knowledge and shared growth.

This vision lies at the heart of the Dandjoo Darbalung Program, one of St Catherine’s College’s flagship initiatives supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through academic success, Cultural strength and leadership.

A culturally strong home for higher learning

Since 2012, Dandjoo Darbalung has welcomed students from across Australia, offering a safe and inclusive community grounded in Cultural identity and connection. With 70 residents from over 30 communities and more than 380 alumni, the program’s success is built on shared values, mentorship and belonging.

Our three pillars

Excellence
We set high expectations and provide the support to meet them. Students are encouraged to achieve in every aspect of their lives.

Academic and Cultural Support
Residents access tailored tutoring, study workshops, Cultural mentoring and connections to First Nations learning centres across WA.

Empowerment and Pathways
The program supports each student beyond graduation, helping them step into careers and leadership roles grounded in Cultural Identity and self-determination.
