Q&A with Charli Windberg: From Pemberton to Perth
“Living on campus helps you settle in fast and meet people straight away. It’s a big move, but one you won’t regret. ”
Charli grew up in the South West and moved to Perth to study medicine at Curtin University. With support from a Curtin University Home Away From Home Scholarship, she is living at St Catherine’s College at Curtin in a move that shaped everything from her friendships to academic success.
What led you to study medicine at Curtin?
Growing up in Pemberton, I’ve always been interested in science and helping people, so medicine felt like the right path. Curtin’s medical programme stood out because you become involved in real-life learning straight away.
How did you feel when you received the Curtin University accommodation scholarship?
It felt exciting and reassuring. Moving to Perth is a big step, and this gave me the chance to live on campus and focus on my studies. It gave me a real sense of being backed, a vote of confidence in what I am working towards.
Why did you choose to live at St Cat’s Curtin Campus?
I wanted to be in a place where I’d feel supported and meet people easily. From day one, St Cat’s made that easy. It’s also on campus, so getting to class is simple.
How has living at the College shaped your first year?
With everything in one place, it’s helped bring uni life together. Study, friendships and routines feel settled. I’ve met students from different degrees and year groups, and there’s always something happening. Study groups, dinners and social events keep things fun without being full-on.
What has been the most significant shift moving from the South West to Perth?
The pace. Life here moves quickly and there’s always something on, but I’ve enjoyed being part of it. I’ve also loved exploring parts of the city and trying new things that weren’t as easy to access back home.
What stands out about the community at St Cat’s?
There’s a relaxed atmosphere where people genuinely help each other out, whether it’s sharing notes, catching up after class, or sitting together in the Dining Hall. Meals in the dining hall are the highlight and I love hearing about how my friends’ days have been.
What’s been a standout moment from your first year?
Getting through my first exams with results I was proud of. It gave me confidence. Movie nights, late chats in the common room and sharing meals with friends in the Dining Hall have made it feel like home.
