Q&A with Jaimee Whirledge: A Full Circle Moment at St Catherine’s

Real connection happens when people show up in person. That kind of presence can have a big impact on students finding their way.

Alumna Jaimee Whirledge returned to St Catherine’s College this year to direct the student production of Almost, Maine, marking her second year in a row directing the College’s annual play. A performing arts graduate from WAAPA and former College Co-President, Jaimee lived at St Catherine’s from 2021 to 2023. She shares what it meant to return to the community in a creative role once again.

How did it feel to be back at St Catherine’s?

It felt really special. St Catherine’s was such an important place for me while I was studying. It gave me a home and a group of friends who became my support. Coming back to work on something creative here was a full circle moment.

What drew you to this opportunity?

I have always loved being involved in the arts, and I think it is so valuable to keep doing what brings you joy and curiosity, even if it is not part of your study or career. This gave me the chance to do that in a space that still feels like home.

What did you enjoy most about the process?

The people made it. The cast brought so many unexpected ideas and moments into rehearsals. They added humour and personality to their roles that really shaped the show. Some of my favourite parts were completely their own.

Do any particular memories stand out?

Yes, the first time we rehearsed with the band was amazing. The energy lifted instantly. There were also so many little gems, whether it was a gesture or the way someone delivered a line, that made the show unique.

How did it feel different from your time as a resident?

When I lived here, I was in the middle of everything. This time I came back with a clear creative role, which let me focus on the show and the wellbeing of the cast. It was a different kind of connection but just as meaningful.

What surprised you the most?

How quickly everything came together. We had a short rehearsal window, but the commitment and care from everyone involved made it work beautifully.

What did this experience mean to you personally?

A lot. Being asked to return and direct felt like a real vote of confidence. It showed me that St Catherine’s truly values its alumni and wants to stay connected after graduation. That sense of belonging continues.

What are you working on now?

I am currently touring with Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, performing and running workshops in schools across Western Australia. It is energetic, rewarding and so much fun.

Would you return for another College project?

Absolutely. I really enjoyed directing this year and would love to be involved again. There is so much potential for creative projects here.

Any words for other alumni thinking about getting involved?

If it is something you are curious about, go for it. Real connection happens when people show up in person. That kind of presence can have a big impact on students finding their way.
