Dusty Morgan (FR 2025) among first students in Bentley Hospital Birth Centre program
“The women really know their midwives and you can tell the difference. They’re so much more comfortable to talk and open up and share what’s happening.”
In a quiet room at the Royal Perth Bentley Group Midwifery Birth Centre, a new family meets for the first time, and Dusty Morgan is there to witness it.
College alumna and Curtin University midwifery student, Dusty is the first to complete the Centre’s new continuity of care placement program, working alongside women throughout pregnancy, birth and early postnatal care.
“I pretty much have to warn every woman that if I am crying after the baby’s out, I’m okay,” she says. “Nothing’s gone wrong. I’m just overwhelmed with emotion.”
Based at Bentley Hospital, the program allows students to build genuine relationships with the women they support, something Dusty has seen shape each experience.
“The women really know their midwives and you can tell the difference,” she explains. “They’re so much more comfortable to talk and open up and share what’s happening.”
It is in these moments that the work settles into focus. A newborn passed into waiting arms. A family finding its rhythm.
“And it’s just so lovely to witness that,” she reflects. “You get the warm and fuzzies for sure.”
At St Catherine’s, academic study carries into real clinical environments. Dusty’s placement marks that transition in practice.
Her placement marks the beginning of a new program at the Royal Perth Bentley Group Midwifery Birth Centre, and a pathway that will continue to shape both students and the families they support.
