St Catherine’s College residents Loc Ngo, Milan Urbani and Steele Baker were part of the winning team in the Engineers Without Borders Australia × Aurecon Design Challenge.

Hosted at Aurecon’s Perth office, the challenge gave participants the opportunity to work in teams on a real-world problem before presenting their solutions to a panel of practising engineers.

For the St Cat’s residents involved, the experience took engineering beyond the classroom, combining creative thinking, technical problem solving, teamwork and communication.

Connecting engineering study with industry

Industry experiences such as the Design Challenge give engineering residents an opportunity to apply what they are learning at university while gaining insight into how engineers approach complex problems in professional settings.

They also provide opportunities to meet practising engineers, work with peers and develop the communication and collaboration skills that sit alongside technical knowledge in an engineering career.

At St Catherine’s College, these external opportunities complement professional mentoring, academic support and the College’s Campus to Corporate and Insight Series, which connect residents with researchers, alumni and professionals working across engineering and related industries.

In 2026, engineering residents have also explored large-scale offshore projects through the College’s Wild Engineering Insight session, while the Faculty & Industry Dinner: The Future of Energy brought together leaders across engineering, energy, infrastructure and research.

Former St Catherine’s resident and Fulbright Scholar Caleb Adams has also taken his engineering pathway from UWA to postgraduate study and research at MIT.
