Behind the FBL Commerce Ball with Benedict Sutjiatmadja
Benedict Sutjiatmadja, a Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Marketing and Management at Curtin University, recently served as Marketing and Theme Co-Lead for the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) Commerce Ball.
Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, Benedict saw the role as a chance to get involved, meet new people and apply what he was learning through his degree.

“There was no expectation from anyone. We simply wanted to do it. We were exhausted, but it was so much fun working together through the night”
"When I received the opportunity to study abroad, I made a promise to myself that I would make the most of every opportunity," he said.
As part of the committee, Benedict helped develop and promote the Ball's Hollywood Glam theme. His role included overseeing the event's visual identity, from red curtains and white pearls to gold accents that carried through the event. He also supported event delivery on the night and stepped into the role of MC.
One of his favourite memories came before the event itself.
"My favourite moment, funny enough, was the DIY camera," Benedict said.
Working alongside two friends, Benedict spent two consecutive all-nighters designing and building the prop from scratch.
"There was no expectation from anyone. We simply wanted to do it. We were exhausted, but it was so much fun working together through the night."
The experience also highlighted the importance of communication, teamwork and setting clear expectations.
"I learnt that proper expectations, clear guidelines and active participation are required for any team to function effectively," he said.
Reflecting on his time at St Catherine's College Curtin, Benedict said living on campus has made it easier to stay involved in student life and take on opportunities at Curtin University.
"St Cats being on campus allows me to be present, involved and in person for my commitments," he said.
"When you join St Cats, it isn't only accommodation. It is an important chapter of your university life. Make the most of the opportunity and always say yes to whatever experience or challenge comes your way."
For Benedict, the experience reinforced the value of getting involved alongside his studies. Whether planning events, leading student initiatives or taking on new challenges, he believes some of the most valuable lessons happen outside the classroom.
