Volunteering with Ocean Heroes

Ocean Heroes is a charity that helps neurodivergent children and young people on the autism spectrum build confidence through surfing and beach-based experiences.
We spoke with Casey Harrison, a second-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Mechanical Engineering student, about student volunteering with Ocean Heroes in Perth.
What made you decide to volunteer with Ocean Heroes?
I heard about this volunteering event through friends at the College. When I did some research and learned about Ocean Heroes, I liked the idea of helping children with additional needs to enjoy surfing. With this information, I definitely wanted to be involved and to share the joy I get from spending time at the beach and in the ocean.
What was the most memorable part of the day?
Throughout the day, we would rotate through various kids and their families. In the process, I witnessed many memorable moments. I loved seeing the children enjoy the water and spending time with volunteer helpers. I enjoyed helping those in doubt enjoy the activity and also ensuring that they always felt safe. Seeing the biggest smiles on their faces was a highlight.
What stood out to you about the impact Ocean Heroes has on the children and families who attend?
During the debrief and run-through in the morning, they explained that some children arrive excited to jump on a board and get into the surf, while others are happy building sandcastles or playing tag.
Each child and their situation were different, and as volunteers, we needed to be flexible in responding to their needs. This meant helping build their confidence, no matter what they were doing. I witnessed children and their family members laughing and smiling throughout the day, which showed how much they enjoyed the experience. This happiness meant I had achieved what I was there to do.
Why do you think opportunities like this are valuable?
I have been a resident at St Catherine's since February 2025. During this time, the College has opened up various volunteering opportunities for me, including Ocean Heroes, Breakfast Club at Como Secondary College, tree planting through the South East Regional Action Group and mixed basketball.
Ocean Heroes is an experience I might never have heard of if I weren’t living at St Catherine's, and for that I am grateful. Volunteering is something everyone should make time for. Not only are you helping someone else, but you also gain a sense of achievement.
Because of St Catherine's introduction to volunteering and the impact it can achieve, I have also volunteered at Curtin University.
