Teaching With Purpose: Bill Ellis Shares Insights With Future Educators
Former resident Bill Ellis returned to St Catherine’s College at Curtin to share lessons from his teaching journey, reflecting on the experiences, challenges and opportunities that have shaped his career in education.
Moments from our recent Insight talk with former resident Bill Ellis.
Residents joined Bill in the Sky Lounge at St Catherine’s College, Curtin to hear about his teaching journey and the experiences that continue to shape his work as an educator.
A resident of St Catherine’s College from 2014 to 2015, Bill is now an educator at Yarralinka Primary School. During the evening, he reflected on the path that led him into teaching, the challenges and rewards of the profession and the importance of approaching new opportunities with confidence and an open mind.
Drawing on his own experiences in the classroom, Bill encouraged students to make the most of their teaching placements and remain open to learning throughout their careers.
“Hopefully, I have given a good grounding in what to do to have a successful teaching prac and how to learn as much as you can with a spirit of confidence, but also open-mindedness at your first school,” he said.
“If we learn well, then our students will learn well too.”
Among those attending was Amelia Severino, a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) student at Curtin University.
Reflecting on the evening, Amelia said the session provided valuable insight into the Australian Curriculum and the realities of teaching.
“I've just recently had the most wonderful experience with Bill here, learning about the Australian Curriculum,” she said.
The event formed part of the College’s Insight series, which brings residents together with alumni and industry professionals to share their experiences and career journeys.
By returning to St Catherine’s College Curtin, Bill offered residents a thoughtful perspective on the impact educators can have both inside and beyond the classroom.
