Education Careers in Focus at Insight Series

Connecting residents with industry professionals was at the heart of the Insight Series event at St Catherine’s College, Curtin.

Former St Catherine’s College resident and educator Bill Ellis shared lessons from his teaching journey with residents at St Catherine’s College at Curtin University.

Designed to complement residents' academic studies, the series brings students together with experienced professionals, alumni and industry leaders who share practical insights into their careers and the opportunities ahead.

At a recent Insight event, former St Catherine’s College at UWA resident and educator Bill Ellis joined residents to discuss his journey into teaching, the realities of the profession and the impact educators can have on young people's lives.

For Amelia Severino, a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) student at Curtin University, the evening provided valuable perspectives as she prepares for a career in education.

If we learn well, then our students will learn well too.

"I gained valuable insights into the Australian Curriculum and what to expect during teaching placements," Amelia said.

One of Amelia's key takeaways was the importance of approaching teaching practicums with confidence while remaining open to learning from experienced educators and colleagues.

Bill encouraged students to embrace continual learning throughout their careers.

"I hope you've been given a good grounding in what to do to have a successful teaching prac, and how to learn as much as you can," he said. "Approach your first school with confidence, but also open-mindedness. If we learn well, then our students will learn well too."

For Amelia, the event reinforced the value of learning from those already working in the profession.

Beyond supporting academic success, opportunities such as the Insight series help residents build professional networks, explore career pathways and develop the confidence needed to transition from university into the workforce.

By connecting residents with alumni and industry professionals, St Catherine’s College continues to create opportunities for academic enrichment, meaningful mentorship and employment-ready learning beyond the classroom.
