From Kalgoorlie to Curtin: Sophie Barton Begins Her Journey Into Medicine
First-year resident Sophie Barton has joined our Curtin Campus as she begins her medical studies, with a clear focus on giving back to regional Western Australia.
Originally from Kalgoorlie, Sophie recently graduated from John Paul College and has now begun her studies at Curtin University. She was recently featured by ABC News alongside fellow Kalgoorlie graduate James Gent in a story highlighting regional students entering the medical profession.
Both students represent a growing focus across Australian medical schools to encourage students from regional communities to pursue medicine, helping strengthen the healthcare workforce in rural and remote areas.
For Sophie, the decision to study medicine is driven by curiosity and a desire to help others.
“I really like learning how things work and why they work. I just love the thought of helping people and having an impact on people’s lives.”

“The one thing I am sure about is I want to come back to Kalgoorlie and other regions and give back a bit.”
Moving to Perth marks a new chapter as she begins university. Leaving Kalgoorlie and starting life in a new city is a significant step, one she is approaching with enthusiasm.
“It’s a completely new experience. I’ll be on my own, fully independent, but I am really excited for it,” she said.
While Sophie is still exploring which area of medicine she may specialise in, her long-term goal is already clear.
“The one thing I am sure about is I want to come back to Kalgoorlie and other regions and give back a bit,” she said.
Her path reflects the growing role regional students play in strengthening Australia’s future medical workforce. Research consistently shows that students from rural and remote communities are more likely to return to those communities as doctors, helping address workforce shortages across regional Australia.
At St Catherine’s College Curtin, Sophie joins a community of residents studying at Curtin University while building friendships, independence and support as they begin university life.
Her story sits alongside many residents beginning their studies with a clear sense of direction and connection to community.
